SUNDEK of Washington helped the City of Danville bring their bright splash pad vision to life at Ballou Park.
Ballou Park in Danville, Virginia—one of the state’s oldest municipal parks—is home to ball fields, tennis courts, picnic shelters, and a playground. When the City of Danville decided to expand the park with a new splash pad, they chose Tuff Coat for its attractive, non-skid, highly durable finish that’s ideal for wet recreational areas. Carolina Recreation and Design, the project’s general contractor, consulted Modern Recreational Technologies (MRT), developer of Tuff Coat, for a preferred installer of the product, and MRT recommended SUNDEK of Washington.

Because of this established relationship and SUNDEK’s proven expertise, Carolina Recreation and Design contacted Bob to discuss the new project. After reviewing the design drawings, SUNDEK of Washington confirmed they could execute the layout.

For the 3,500-square-foot surface, crews carefully hand-laid the entire pattern, ensuring every curve and intersection matched the vision of the designers. Once the coating was complete, SUNDEK applied a layer of SunClear Acrylic sealer to protect the surface and preserve the rich colors against weather and wear.
While installation practices and workmanship remained steady throughout, the schedule wasn’t without complications—Virginia’s wet season forced the team to shift the timeline three separate times. Even so, SUNDEK of Washington adapted quickly, coordinating around the weather and maintaining steady progress whenever conditions allowed. Their flexibility and persistence ensured the splash pad was delivered on schedule, providing the community with a bright, safe, and durable space for families to enjoy.
