Stafford Pool Deck Resurfacing & Wall Overlay Unify Backyard

SUNDEK of Washington resurfaced 2,385 square feet of concrete, creating a unified backyard complete with a hand-carved decorative retaining wall.

Homeowners in Stafford, Virginia, wanted to expand their backyard space and added approximately 600 square feet of new concrete. Their space was bigger, but now they needed to make it cohesive—seamlessly merge the existing concrete with the new. That’s when they reached out to SUNDEK of Washington for ideas.

Residential pool deck resurfacing in Stafford, Virginia For a residential backyard in Stafford, VA, with both old and new concrete, SUNDEK of Washington resurfaced more than 2,300 square feet of concrete to create a unified design for the pool area retreat.

In addition to wanting something cohesive, the homeowners wanted a surface that would be easy to clean and comfortable to walk on during hot summer months. They also wanted to do something nice with their concrete retaining wall.

After evaluating the project, SUNDEK of Washington proposed resurfacing all the horizontal concrete surfaces with Classic Texture in Bone White while using SunStamp in custom colors to enhance the retaining wall. The combination would provide a cohesive design while allowing the vertical feature to stand out with the appearance of natural stone.

SUNDEK’s Classic Texture is the company’s original spray texture overlay system and has been used on residential, commercial, and even military projects for decades. The coating creates a slip-resistant surface that improves safety while its non-porous acrylic finish helps prevent dirt, oils, and chemicals from penetrating the coating, making routine cleaning much easier. The textured finish is also more comfortable under bare feet than plain concrete, brick, or tile, while offering a durable, economical decorative concrete solution with a wide variety of design possibilities.

The homeowners selected Bone White for the primary coating color, a choice that offered both practical and aesthetic advantages. Its neutral appearance complements nearly any architectural style or landscape design, allowing other backyard features to remain the focal point. Lighter colors like Bone White also reflect more sunlight than darker surfaces, helping the concrete stay cooler underfoot during hot summer days—an especially valuable benefit around a pool.

To give the retaining wall a distinctive appearance, SUNDEK proposed using SunStamp. The decorative overlay system allows trained SUNDEK artisans to create highly customized designs using stamping techniques, coloring methods, and hand detailing. The finished surface can replicate the appearance of natural materials such as stone, slate, or tile, giving ordinary concrete a completely new character while maintaining the durability of a concrete surface.

The homeowners were impressed with SUNDEK’s proposed design and appreciated that it addressed both the appearance and performance they were looking for. With a plan that would unify the entire backyard while providing long-lasting, easy-to-maintain surfaces, they chose to move forward with the project.

Although part of the backyard consisted of newer concrete, proper surface preparation remained an essential part of the entire installation process. Before applying any decorative coating, SUNDEK prepared the concrete to create the proper surface profile needed for strong adhesion. Careful preparation helps ensure the new coating bonds securely to the concrete, contributing to long-term durability and performance.

Hand-carved decorative concrete retaining wall in Stafford SUNDEK of Washington hand-carved the design for this retaining wall and used custom colors to create the appearance of stone and complement the other concrete surfaces.

The retaining wall became one of the project’s standout features. Rather than relying on pre-made templates, SUNDEK treated the wall as a custom artistic installation, developing custom colors to recreate the look of natural stone.

"Our crews didn’t use a stencil for the retaining wall," explains Robert Brown, sales representative for SUNDEK of Washington. "Every line was hand-carved to create the custom design."

To top everything off, SUNDEK of Washington broadcast an aluminum oxide additive for additional slip resistance and then sealed all surfaces for long-lasting protection. The completed project brought every concrete surface together to create one cohesive outdoor living space. Homeowners were thrilled with the finished result and the fresh new look of their outdoor space.
