What is a broom finish?

Broom finished concrete, sometimes called brushed or broomed concrete, is achieved by carefully dragging a broom over the top of concrete when it’s still wet. This process creates a beautiful, elegant texture.

You can combine broom finishing with other decorative concrete options. Colored concrete with a broom texture is an especially popular option.

Benefits of a broom finish

A broom finish is an affordable way to get a slip-resistant and beautiful surface. Homeowners and commercial property owners like that it looks elegant, but it’s subtle enough to fit with any style.

Broom finish on existing concrete

A broom finish isn’t only done on brand-new concrete, contrary to popular belief. If you already have a concrete surface, it can still be achieved! If your existing concrete slab is viable, SUNDEK of Washington can apply a coating on top of your slab and complete the broom finish technique.

If your existing surface has minor imperfections such as cracking or chipping, we can resolve that before putting on the new coating. You’ll get a surface that looks brand-new without having to tear any concrete out.

The coating we apply to the surface after prepping is SUNDEK’s SunRestore. This system is used on brand-new concrete slabs and existing slabs.

Where can broom finish be applied?

With SUNDEK’s SunRestore system, SUNDEK of Washington can apply Broom Finish just about anywhere on a property:

  • Driveways
  • Patios
  • Retaining walls
  • Sidewalks
  • Stairs
  • …and more.

Let us know what you have in mind, and we can figure out how to make it happen.

Creating a broom finish

Generally, here’s what we do at SUNDEK of Washington to install a broom finish on an existing slab of concrete:

  1. Clean. First, we remove all loose materials, dirt, and debris.
  2. Prep. We prepare the surface so the new coating can adhere properly. To do this, we use either an acid etch or grinder.
  3. Repair. To begin with a base that’s as stable as possible, we resolve cracks, spalling, and other surface imperfections.
  4. Prime. We put the primer on the concrete surface with a sprayer or roller.
  5. Coat surface. We evenly apply the coating to the surface.
  6. Add texture. We run a special type of broom made for finishing concrete across the surface to add texture.
  7. Detail work. Grind or cut out joints and add any other desired effects.
  8. Seal. To protect the new surface from staining and other types of damage, we apply two coats of sealer to provide maximum coverage.

Is applying a broom finish a DIY project?

While it’s possible to do it yourself, we recommend talking with a contractor such as SUNDEK of Washington.

Like any construction work, we are familiar with the common pitfalls people encounter with these types of projects. Since we’re a local business, we also know what times of year and times of day are best to do the work, as elements and temperature can affect the coating application process.

Though it’s a simple-looking finish, a broom finish effect is more difficult to achieve than it looks. You need to make sure you get complete coverage and are consistent as you move the broom across the surface.

In McLean, VA, SUNDEK of Washington resurfaced the driveway at right using the SunRestore Broom Finish system.

Longevity of broom finish

Just like any other SUNDEK surface, the SunRestore coating with broom finish will last for years, maintaining its beauty. In fact, according to Mr. and Mrs. Bob Lane, clients in McLean, Virginia have this to say about their driveway: “After four years, the driveway still looks brand new, without any pitting, cracking or discoloration. It is very easy to clean and has required zero maintenance.”
